What is the Whit Friday Brass Band Contest?
It has been a long-standing tradition since 1884, earning the title of 'the greatest free show on earth'. Over 100 bands participate in 22 different contests, scattered around the moorland villages and towns on the western edge of the Pennines.

With over £2000 in Prize Money funds available, raised through sponsorship, the Heyrod Village attracts quite a crowd and you can expect to see some 30+ bands during the course of the evening from 4.30pm through to 11pm.
Each band plays two pieces, one on the march and another on a rostrum or stage area, with each performance being scored blind by an adjudicator. The contest is funded through sponsorship, adverts within the programme, and support from Tameside.
